Black★Rock Shooter 1/8 PVC by GSC

She arrived on the 26th, a huge brown box delivered to my door. I signed my name, took the box and opened it. It took me a few minutes to just admire the box and realize that Black★Rock Shooter, who I intended on buying for my birthday present back on the 11th of August, was here in my hands at last. Her frequent delays pushed her all the way to December. I think I learned a lot of patience while waiting for her. I had pre-ordered her the minute I knew the pre-orders were opened and I was determined to not cancel her under any circumstances. Hobby Search was my retail outlet of choice. EMS shipping, though expensive, the only option. Do I regret the price tag of 8,867 Yen (roughly $97) plus the added expense of EMS bringing the grand total to $140 and some odd cents? Hell no. She is currently sold out, though there’s a Black Blade version coming next year you could pre-order which is quite a bit cheaper. Read on for a full review, with pictures and her back story.
Black ★ Rock Shooter by huke
Black★Rock Shooter was originally an illustration by an artist named huke. She was an original character, whom musician Ryo, the lead of the 11 person music group Supercell took an interest in, and thus created a song for. This song was sung by Miku Hatsune, and regardless of similarities between B★RS and Miku, they are not the same character. There is an anime coming out next year entitled Black★Rock Shooter. Another version, the Black Blade ver. is to be released next year as well, as is also a Nendoroid. Hopefully we’ll be seeing other characters from the series like Dead Master and Black★Gold Saw. I found myself attracted to the darkness of B★RS from the moment I heard about her, and have so far collected 3 shirts, 2 mugs, 2 notebooks, this figure and I’ve already pre-ordered the blade version. I really can’t get enough of her.
Everything about this figure is attractive to me. She stands tall above the other 1/8 scale figures I own, though I display her separately. Her eyes are the most entrancing figure eyes I’ve ever seen, they look dark at first but in the light they really seem to glow. Her translucent blue flame comes on a separate hair piece, that is as easy to remove as a Figma’s, but holds in perfectly. Her black rock cannon looks a bit weathered from use, surely on purpose and not a flaw on the manufacturer’s end. The base is one of the most amazingly detailed bases I’ve seen, and surely stands out among all the figures I own. Her jacket is slick and shiny, but not too much so, it looks quite realistic. Her pale skin gives her a gothic look, and her dark black/blue hued hair is like a sinister tainted rainbow that shows it’s color in the light. She comes with a black chain, that is fun to mess with and one can find many ways to wrap it around her. Last but definitely not least are her two scars. When one looks at the prototype, you can see that the scars have been changed from the original look. It seems many people find the scar either attractive or unnattractive, but either way it draws attention. In the final product, the scars are a bit brighter red and less natural looking, but in the right light they still look great. I’m actually happy with the way they turned out in the end. This has got to be the best figure I’ve bought this year, quality wise. There are but the slightest imperfections that can only be found by closely scrutinizing. Not one of them is even worth mentioning because they are so small they cannot detract from the pleasure of viewing this figure. I know this figure isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but she is surely one of the best figures I’ll own. Perhaps I’m biased because I absolutely love this style of figure, but that’s just how it is.

Black★Rock Shooter definitely isn’t for people who are turned off by scars, flat chests, pale skin or the dark side. This figure is a 10/10 in my opinion. I’m definitely going to take better pictures of her when I get a new camera. Well, that’s all for my review. Next up I’ll be getting to a post I’ve been meaning to finish for weeks.

Your pictures came out gorgeous. She is truly an amazing figure. I think I like her more than GSC’s Saber Lily and Alter’s Fate Testarossa. She is just so unique and memorable. People who complain about the fact that she has scars or a flat chest must not collect figures for the same reasons I collect because this is a work of art.

I unfortunately couldn’t pre-order because I knew I wouldn’t have the money, but I have wanted her since the moment I learned about the figure.

Ami – I agree, though I don’t own either of them, from the pictures I have seen I think she’s at the least on par with them, though I prefer the style of BRS to them. She is a work of art indeed ^^
mikumin – That’s too bad, but you could always try for the Black Blade version, the price is a lot lower than this one at least. I’m satisfied with how the pictures turned out for now, but I’m definitely getting more when I get a better camera.

Very cool. Overall, she looks great though I think I prefer her without the eye flame. Maybe it just doesn’t look good in photographs but it looks too plasticy. I passed on this figure but it is still quite appealing.
I don’t think I will be able to resist the blade version though ^^.

It’s the first real BRS review that i see… i was stubborn until now… i didn’t liked this figure to buy it.
Certain of your photos make me regret my stubbornness now. Especially when looking at her back. I love her jacket. I like her face more then the one from the prototype. Anyway, i’m at 50% convinced.

Gunstray – haha, glad you liked it, yes the blade version is much more affordable and you’ve got plenty of time to make up your mind if you’re thinking about it ^^
lylibellule – Thank you. Honestly the formidable price does make this a figure that one should really think about before buying. I’d say wait and see if they reprint her soon, and if you’re leaning more towards buying her then, go for it. I’m sure there will be many more reviews very soon that will help you decide.

Nothing wrong with finding the scar attractive. I really like the whole package, the character and pretty much everything that has to do with her, so that’s my reason for buying. The rock cannon is fairly unique, not many girls run around with guns bigger than them.
Outstanding review! I really like the balance of light and darkness in your review. The shadows are really cool, too.
Now I really regret not ordering this figure. I was one of those people who didn’t like the scars, but that just adds up to BRS’s look. Her eyes are very interesting too. Oh well, at least I ordered the Black Blade version. Glad I got another chance.

She is really awesome, just got mine a few days ago and I’m really happy =D Just got some problem with the stand though, that stand grip? does not fit the feet… Dx Must push them a bit to fit it in… Do you have the same problem? Dx

grats on a nice get! too bad amiami wasn’t taking international orders at the time (was it?) ‘cuz i think they had the nice discount price similar to amazon japan’s (~7400yen). i used tenso ‘cuz of danny’s contest prize… but without the $20 off & using a proxy it woulda been about the same as you paid ^^;;; but w/amiami and no proxy fees i think it woulda been a bit cheaper.
anyhow, i’m also in love with this figure. don’t think i have the same enthusiasm for the character as you but man, taking the photos i really fell for her

Kazearashi – Yeah I had that problem with the stand as well but it didn’t really bug me because it’s happened with a lot of figures. Probably has something to do with the PVC settling in the box. The chain is fun to mess with, I’d like to find more similar chains to use with her.

meronpan – AmiAmi wasn’t taking orders back when she was available. By the time I had discovered they took international orders she was sold out or I’d have probably used them. Flandre Scarlet by Griffon should be my first figure from AmiAmi right now.

Being one of the most anticipated figure of 2009, it’s good to see BRS turned out to be great, and it’s definitely good news for you as a BRS fan~
BRS looks great even with normal lighting! Her dark clothes and pale skin gives her a kinda monochromic feel to it, which makes her eyes and the scars stand out.
Too bad I am not planning to get anymore scale figures for now as Fate has completely done it for me now lol…
