My First Anime Crush

I remember when I first started watching anime. Back then I was completely ignorant to the difference between cartoons and Japanese animation, which is pretty embarrassing. I was a pre-teen at the time, and raised in a very small town in the U.S. so really, what can you expect. My first major run-in with anime was actually thanks to a dubbed over Sailor Moon airing on Cartoon Network I believe. It’s been over 10 years ago now so forgive me for not remembering all that well. Yep, Sailor Moon it was. It was my first experience with anime with girls in school uniforms, with magical powers, and all that sparkly girly stuff that manly men either don’t dare watch, or don’t dare talk about (at least around here). I believe I was around 11 or 12 years old when I started watching, religiously every morning before school. It aired at around 5 AM, and I was always up to see it. I’m not really sure just how far I got in the series, but I’m pretty sure I finished the first season. So what does my first anime crush tell you about me?

Back then I had found my first 2D crush, Sailor Mercury, whose real name was Ami Mizuno (or as I knew her, Amy Anderson – aren’t Americanized names in anime strange?). I don’t know exactly what it was that made me like her so much back then anymore, as I really haven’t watched the show in ages. Since I can’t remember why I liked her then, let’s examine her character: A quiet and extremely intelligent bookworm, who always desires to help those around her. She is shy and becomes easily embarrassed, but her shyness is often mistaken as her being stuck up. She’s also very interested in art and science, and aspires to be a doctor and study abroad. She enjoys chess and swimming and is a mathematics genius. Perhaps that’s one reason I liked her, I was always horrible at math. Ami was a kind and gentle character, who was strongly against hurting innocent people. Not much to hate about this kind of girl ne? Well perhaps it’s just my twisted logic, but these kind of girls still turn out being the ones I like in anime.

When transformed, Sailor Mercury had control over the phases of water, and often used her special supercomputer to analyze the enemy. She was the first of the Sailor Scouts to be discovered by Sailor Moon, and she was very dedicated to her, willing to throw her life on the line to protect Usagi.

While I liked most of the girls in Sailor Moon, Mercury stands out as my favorite back from a time when I was really ignorant to the hidden world that anime eventually opened up for me. Of course her type aren’t the only kind of girls I like in anime, and I’m also happily married in real life. I wonder what Riiana thinks of this post :P I’m just really glad that someone out there decided to air anime in the U.S. and I’m thankful for the dubbing that they did because back then I probably wouldn’t have been interested had it been subbed, even though that’s a totally different story now.

Going back and trying to watch even one episode of the first season of Sailor Moon now is almost unbearable. I’ve gotten spoiled by newer and better animation and plots, and I’ve also grown up quite a bit, seeing as how this was back in the 90s. But one thing is for sure, I have to thank Sailor Moon for being opening the flood gates, and even allowing me to hook up with an Asian penpal (who just happened to be obsessed with Sailor Moon), and from there on more and more gates opened and I eventually became the anime obsessed figure buying person that I am today. I don’t give Sailor Moon credit for starting my obsession though but rather being a sort of gateway drug. Chobits will still be the major turning point that made me cross the line into who I am now. But that’s fodder for another day.

And just for punishment for reading my post this far, here’s the opening song to Sailor Moon… in English. This is how I remember it.

Hope you enjoyed the little bit of nostalgia I shared, and maybe the pictures? Well then, I’ve shared my first anime crush(es) with you. Who is(are) your first anime crush(es)?

Chris – I’m surprised I remember honestly XD Thanks for sharing ^^

chubbybots – Mars had to be my second favorite, and I think if I picked nowadays rather than back then, I’d go with Saturn. Cool that I got you thinking about your first anime :)

My first crush was probably Jedite from Sailor Moon. I watched Sailor Moon the same way you did! Dubbed, and early in the morning as a kid! Although it’s easy for me to go back and re-watch Sailor Moon whenever I want, I love watching older anime series. When I was a kid Ami was my least favorite scout, her powers, style, and personality were all too boring for me. As an adult I appreciate her a bit more, but I still prefer Mars, Venus, and Jupiter to her.

  17. I loved Sailor Moon too as a kid, but I think my favorite sailor was Mars.

The only one I ever had was Sekai from School Days.
She had an energetic, happy attitude and a realistic character that I could relate to.

    ~SPOILERS!~
    ~SPOILERS!~

Obviously to anyone who has watched it, I found School Days a VERY depressing watch :P
I was instantly cheering for her before the love triangle even began, was satisfied when the male lead ditched the other girl in an uber dramatic way to be with her instead.

    ~BIGGER SPOILERS!~
    ~BIGGER SPOILERS!~

I felt her pain when she knew she was doing wrong by letting the guy cheat on his “girlfriend” with her but couldn’t bring herself to outright and seriously resist his advances, and when he cheated on her too, while she was pregnant no less. I even sympathized with her when she went nuts and stabbed the guy dead.

Basically, I could relate to her and could see myself doing the same thing in her position (except the stabbing) and felt extremely sorry for her for falling in love with such a careless dick.
Throughout the entire show I just wanted to hug her, lol
