Artist Spotlight: Gia

Hello all, today I’m going to deliver a brand new type of post (for this site at least). I recently decided that it would be great to have the opportunity to share some of the wonderful art I have come to love from Pixiv. Since this is my first time doing this sort of post, I’m not sure on the best way to present it to you, so if you have suggestions on how I could improve this sort of post in the future do let me know. Today I will be showcasing the art from the very talented Pixiv artist: Gia. I would like to let you all know that I have asked and been granted permission to write this post and to show the art that is being used here. All art is property of Gia, and all text is my own personal opinion. I will never do an artist spotlight without first seeking and gaining permission, unlike my regular galleries. I believe this is better for the artist and for all of us as well. After reading this I urge you to check out Gia’s Pixiv profile.

Gia’s artwork caught my eyes instantly and demanded my attention. My first encounter was with this beautiful and unique picture of Rumia from Touhou Project. Of course, that picture was only the beginning of an extremely pleasing eye feast. Gia’s art ranges from Touhou and Miku Hatsune to mechanical monstrosities and weapon or chemical themed girls, and while they are really awesome, I find the real highlights are the original characters. Luckily I don’t really need to describe them because Gia also writes a bit of English text on many of the images which do enough explaining. I guess with my fascination with mecha musume and one of my favorite artists being H.R. Giger, these sort of futuristic alien-like mecha musume are quite to my liking.

Nue Houjuu, one of my favorite newer Touhou characters, from Touhou 12: Unidentified Fantastic Object. This artwork takes her asymmetrical wings to new heights.

Sakuya Izayoi, one of the more popular Touhou characters, the maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. I’m pretty sure most of you who don’t even follow Touhou have seen her around before. I just love how sinister she looks in this, the background is so highly detailed as well. While there are more Touhou artworks, I don’t want to only feature them, so moving on…

Everyone knows Miku Hatsune. There are so many artworks of her out there, but I think this one really shines. I really love Gia’s take on her clothing, as it puts a refreshing take on her. Now we get to the stuff that really makes Gia stand out amongst the rest. The original characters.

Here are just a few examples of the original characters. Most of them seem based on Chemicals or Biohazards, though there are also one based on weapons and other such things. Everything about them, from their colors, to the mecha musume aspects really stand out and suck me in. If Gia were to put out an art book I would surely buy it. I wouldn’t mind some of these girls being made into figures, because they are fine pieces of art. I really get into futuristic works like these. The ones I chose here are just a few of my favorites. Though to be quite honest I’m a fan of them all. It was hard deciding which to put in the post and which to let you discover on your own.

Of course, Gia is not only drawing these types. There are also mechanical monsters and more mecha styled themes, as well as things touching more on the gothic side.

Hopefully you were able to enjoy my very first artist spotlight post, featuring the talented Gia. Be sure to check Gia’s Pixiv profile for much more eye candy if what I have showcased pleases you. I plan on bringing you more works from other artists in the future as I want to bring you more than just figure reviews, but I’m not quite sure on how often. It all depends on the artists’ willingness to allow me to use their art, and how well it goes over.

  4. I also thought about featuring artist spotlights from pixiv artists I like too^_^
I was planning to simply give full credit and link to the artist, but I guess asking for permission would be best to do, can you tell me how it works on pixiv? (I hate that japanese navigation..)

I am only afraid some may not even get what you want from them, don´t think they all speak english..

Gunstray – Yeah the attention to detail is outstanding. I anticipate each new artwork that comes out. Your sister’s name is Gia? ^^

pyoko – You first need to visit their profile and then use the メッセージを送る next to a mail icon, and to check for replies, the 受信箱 Msg/Inbox located at the top of the screen. I asked for permission in Japanese just to be safe, and that’s how I will operate things in the future as well.

Fabrice – Indeed it is :)

  7. @ Persocom: “I asked for permission in Japanese just to be safe”
Sounds nice, but I would neither know how to ask in japanese nor would I be able to understand the answer >.<

  8. These are really lovely arts! I particularly like a few of them very much. The art of Sakuya Izayoi has very nice shadings. Also, the Almace & Slaughter character design is wonderful. Those are some of my thoughts :)

Those are some gorgeous images, it amazes me what artists can create. I can’t even begin to imagine myself making something like this.

Those original character artworks are really cool. Mercury looks especially nice – and deadly. I’ll be sure to check out more of these characters on Gias’ page.

Thanks for introducing this artist, it’s the first time I’ve seen these. Hopefully more artists will allow you to display their works.

Nice artist spotlight. Thanks for introducing me/us to Gias and her artwork. I’ve noticed that most of her art is dark themed. I’m liking the elementals and the weapon drawings the most out of her gallery.

pyoko – I’m not that great at Japanese either, I was quite happy to get a reply at all.

softz – Glad you like, there are a few that particularly shine for me as well but I love them all, using one as my wallpaper right now too ^^

Aya – not that I am aware of, I will ask though.

lovelyduckie – I know what you mean, I couldn’t either for the life of me.

BioToxic – Yeah it was a great pleasure being able to introduce Gia’s works, and I hope that other artists will allow me to in the near future as well. I love the biohazard/chemical girls, if Gia released an artbook collection of them I’d be sure to buy.

    Ghostly_Substance – No problem. I like the darkside ^^

  15. Gia is indeed very talented. I really like the designs of the original characters.

chubbybots – No problem it was my pleasure ^^ Steel Shark is great, that Railgun is win. They would make good shinkis.

  18. Nice find. This artist is amazing. The character designs, especially the series in the middle (with poison…etc.), are gorgeous. The linework is smooth and coloring pristine. Love it. I really love the integration of flesh and machine though. It’s done really well here.

Yi – Yeah for some reason I’m really fascinated by mecha musume designs, especially this type. The original designs do deserve praise, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to share this artist with my readers :)

I love the simplicity of the faces while heavily detailing the rest of the figure. They really knew how to use color to add to the pics and not to over saturate them with all colors.

    Very nice find!

The whole contrast between black and the powerful color is making the artist’s work a masterpiece. Very enjoyable.

bluedrakon – I totally agree there. The use of color and attention to detail along with faces that aren’t overly detailed makes for a great mix.

RyoBase – I see. Quite the observation XD

Gratian – Yeah it really strikes a chord :)
