Kaai Yuki

Back on December 4th of 2009, a Vocaloid named Kaai Yuki (歌愛ユキ) was born, or rather, released. I was quick to dismiss her, as an avid Miku Hatsune fan at the time, for many reasons. For the longest time I heard little to nothing but cover songs of other Vocaloids, which tends to happen each time a Vocaloid is released. In all honesty, I’ve fallen from being a hardcore Vocaloid fanatic to just casually listening to the army of Vocaloids both official and fan made, that have come in the last few years. I’ve only had one of Kaai Yuki’s songs in my playlist that I really cared for since she released, but lately I dug up some more that I can enjoy. So since I didn’t give her a proper welcome when she came out, I thought I’d do this post.

Kaai Yuki was developed by AH-Software, and her voice comes from a real elementary school girl who’s name remains (to my knowledge) unknown. This is likely to protect her from crazed lolicons and the likes, which is a needed precaution to take. Her voice is soft and breathy, and she doesn’t really come across as a very powerful singer. She wasn’t really intended to anyways. This is probably why she doesn’t share the spotlight in the never-ending army of Vocaloids and Utau that have emerged since the days of Miku Hatsune’s starlit beginnings. Today I’d like to share some of the songs made with her software that I enjoy.

This was my personal favorite for the longest time. I like chocolate, French and upbeat music. I personally don’t care for the animation of the video much but I do still like the song.

A fitting tune for a rainy day, coming across as melancholy yet somehow relaxing. I could easily fall asleep listening to this song.

This is a dark and ominous tune. I love how her soft voice works with the music so well. Perhaps I just like dark music like this mixed with a synthesized child’s voice.

Here’s another nice upbeat and happy tune balance out the selection here. While it’s not my favorite I do like it, as she blends into the music well.

I’m getting attached to this song, I think it really brings out the beauty in her voice.

I picked this one out for the anime lovers out there. This time around she covers Bakemonogatari’s 4th OP “Ren-ai Circulation”. I figure most people here would recognize the tune so I added it to the mix. I do prefer the original song over this version though.

Well then, I’ve shared a few videos of Kaai Yuki, and I hope you enjoyed the music. If not that’s fine, I have quite wide musical tastes so there’s always a chance you’ll enjoy one of my future music posts. I really do love music, and I should try to post more regularly in that particular category. I know it’s been a slow year so far with this blog, but I haven’t given up yet, take care everyone, and hope to see you again!

I am actually trying to get my collection of anime ost’s rebuilt. I have been getting some Vocaloids as well.

This is interesting that she is so young doing this. The Lost in the Fog is actually a bit depressing. I think I will stay with the upbeated ones like Metaor 36.0

bluedrakon – Not a bad idea ^^ Good luck rebuilding your anime ost collection. It is interesting to see someone so young lending their voice to a Vocaloid, perhaps some day when she’s older we’ll find out how it was done.

There’s so many vocaloids I’ve never even heard of. A grade schooler? really? I guess they have to appeal to all sorts of people haha.

Her singing is more on the cute side. I wonder if a real elementary schooler might be able to pull off the kinds of tunes they make her sing. The wonders of technology!

exilehero – Same here, I’ve fallen way behind. I know of a handful but there are so many it’s hard for me to tell which are official and which are fan made now. I wonder as well, I’m sure there’s some talented little singers out there though. At least this way there’s no real human child being forced to sing on stage and the likes.

  5. Is it just me, or does ‘I am living’ make her sound much more like her age than the other songs?

    Never heard of this.

Find it quite weird though, since both the official and non-official Vocaloids get exposure in the fandom.

I also find it quite odd, was there really any need to use a real elementary aged kid for the sampling?

Still, I like the songs, I’m curious to see what else people have come up for her.

Valence – You’re probably right about the voice, though I’m not sure about the complexity of the lyrics.

Miette-chan – Vocaloids have become a sort of phenomenon all their own I think, so even the least known of them do enjoy fandom. I really don’t know why or who’s idea it was to use an elementary aged girl for the sampling, but I do hope that they didn’t force her to do it. You really never know.

  8. There are so many Vocaloids, it’s hard to keep up. Her voice does sound rather breathy, not really to my tastes. I prefer clearer voices like Sasaki Yuuko (one of my favourite singers).

Nopy – There sure are. I followed well up until they announced a bunch of new ones coming after Luka. I guess I got lost in their high paced releasing. That makes perfect sense.

  10. Okay…this post just proved how out of touch I am with vocaloids. Besides the famous ones that get the figure treatments, I don’t know any other vocaloids. So thanks for sharing. =)

Hoshiko – You’re welcome ^^ I think it’s pretty normal that ones like this aren’t as well known.

“a Wonder of Aisya” is my favorite Kaai Yuki song and video. She sounds remarkably natural and “real” in this: http://youtu.be/A0dtjOPczVU

  13. Like the rest of the commenters above I have not heard of this particular vocaloid before. It does sound like it’s a little more niche than Crypton’s vocaloids.

But the voice seems to sound a bit more natural, and also gives a rather innocent touch to it. This makes upbeats songs sound even more cheerful, while slow and sombre songs even sadder.

Thanks for sharing this out; it’s nice to learn something that people tend to overlook but is also part of what we enjoy or look into.

microbry – I have to agree, that’s a great song, thanks for linking me!

Q – I agree, the innocence in her voice does a lot for the overall mood of the songs she’s used in. I’m always glad to discover things that are overlooked, it’s like finding a special treasure.

I haven’t see this anime yet. Thanks for sharing it here. I will probably watch this because I’m an anime enthusiast as well. How many episodes does this anime have?

I love the videos and music!

  16. Wait..what more Vocaloids! Never heard of this one before. Seen some pictures of it but I have no idea it was a vocaloid. Nice find! I really like her voice especially the second song. Thanks for the share.

  17. Rei – Your quite welcome, glad you like her so much :) It really is hard to keep track of all the Vocaloids these days.

  18. I agree. There is so much Vocaloid songs. I usually go to moetron because they have this weekly vocaloid ranking. But still they are not good enough compared to Kaai Yuki :P

Rei – :) I just surf around youtube for hours on end at times XD

Yi – I assume you meant Disco Chocolat, and yeah I guess I was a bit harsh on the animation, it’s really not bad. Better than I could do that’s for sure.
